Delaware Department of Transportation - Press Release - Online Vehicle Registration Now Available to DMV Customers

Press Release -- May 19, 2014
Online Vehicle Registration Now Available to DMV Customers

Dover -- The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has added a new service that will allow customers to complete their vehicle registration. Instead of coming inside the DMV office or choosing the mail-in registration option, drivers can now opt to complete the process online from work, home or with a compatible mobile device. This new service will increase customer service levels and reduce wait times at all DMV facilities.

The new online vehicle registration option is available to any customer with a MyDMV account. By visiting the DMV website at, any driver can create and access their MyDMV services with a user name and password. Once registered all online service options are available allowing customers to print a driver record, change their vehicle registration address and signing up for the Next of Kin registry.

DMV Director Jennifer Cohan explained, "The Delaware DMV is well known for routinely launching innovative online services. The online vehicle registration process is our newest effort to help customers save time. By allowing drivers to complete their registration work with a MyDMV account, DMV staff will be able to serve customers on site more quickly, reducing the time they have to spend at our offices."

When a vehicle is due for registration renewal and needs to pass a physical DMV inspection on site, the inspection can be done up to 90 days prior to the expiration date. Once the vehicle passes inspection, based on customer preferences it can be validated for one or two years. On average approximately 4,500 vehicle owners use the mail-in renewal process. Each of these transactions can now be done online, saving both the customer and DMV staff time and effort.
